Vice President, Research

This is a continuing position.
Your Challenge
As one of the Vice Presidents, Research, you will be responsible for providing leadership and direction to a portfolio of institutes, each responsible for research and development in a scientific or industrial sector key to developing Canadian competitiveness. Additionally, you will lead a variety of NRC-wide initiatives or programs. Reporting directly to the President, you will champion the continued development and implementation of NRC's strategic directions, and be a key member of the senior executive team.

Education
An advanced degree in engineering or science

Experience
Relevant experience in research and innovation. Extensive senior management experience in a complex R&D environment, including demonstrated ability to lead significant change, build superior research teams and direct large-scale multi-disciplinary initiatives. Substantial exposure to industry and government gained through the establishment of collaborative research projects, partnerships, consortia or other activities in support of research and innovation.

This position is bilingual non-imperative CCC/CCC. Unilingual persons may apply but must demonstrate the requisite abilities to achieve the required levels of linguistic proficiency as determined by the Public Service Commission. Assessment Criteria
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies:
Knowledge of the Canadian innovation community, in general, as well as the research community and industrial environment, in particular. In-depth understanding of R&D and how it relates to the innovation process. Understanding of issues related to industrial R&D and technology commercialization. Knowledge of the international S&T environment, emerging trends, issues and opportunities. Sound knowledge of leadership/management principles, particularly as they relate to strategic business planning, change management and organizational alignment. General knowledge of the structure of government.

Behavioural Competencies:

Results Orientation: Focusing efforts on achieving quality results consistent with the NRC vision. Valuing People: Treating people fairly, with dignity and integrity, to promote commitment and productivity. Communication: Openly communicating in a compelling, honest, persuasive and articulate manner, ensuring the message is clear, understood and consistent with NRC objectives. Business Understanding: Setting direction and operating in keeping with an understanding of the industry or economic sector, market dynamics and priorities, and NRC's role in regional and national systems of innovation. Developing others: Developing others by providing a supportive growth environment and by coaching and mentoring. Self-knowing and self-development: Assessing strengths and weaknesses and engaging in ongoing self-development and improvement; maintaining effectiveness in the face of change or ambiguity. For this position, NRC will evaluate candidates using the following competency profile(s): Manager/Supervisor.

Relocation
Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with NRC's directives.

Salary Range
From $122,701 to $163,559 per annum.
